Bus Travel in Italy

Italy has a well structured transport system. Means of transportation in Italy include trains, buses, flights, cars, trams, on foot, pipelines and ships.

Public transportation in Italy is well developed. There is also a disproportionately large number of harbors for carrying goods as well as passengers. Important transportation system in the country are:
Ports and Harbors
The Geographical location of the country explains the presence of a large number of ports and harbors in Italy. The large boot shaped peninsula of Italy is almost surrounded by water bodies. With its proximity to the Adriatic Sea in the North-East, the Ionian Sea in the South-East, the Tyrrhenian Sea in the South-West, the Ligurian Sea in the North-West, Italy also extends into the Mediterranean Sea. It has many outlets into the water which has been well utilized as Ports and Harbors. There are a number of Ports and Harbors in Italy, including Ancona, Trieste, Bari, Brindisi, Augusta, Plermo.

Railway network
There are a number of trains that connect Italy with different parts of the continent but a real pride for the Ferrovie dello Stato is the Eurostar or the Treni Eurostar. The Eurostar is also one of the most expensive trains for traveling. Another train to Italy is the Intercity. This train takes a much longer time to travel than Eurocity and is also not as comfortable as the latter. It is much cheaper than the Eurostar. However, the new Modern Intercity plus is much more comfortable with a smarter look and convenient arrangements.

Bus Services
Bus Service in Italy connects the Italian cities with the country sides. Affordable, convenient, reliable and comfortable, are some of the factors that have accounted for the growing popularity of the Italian Bus Services . Traveling Italy through bus is cheaper and hassle-free than any other forms of transportation like private cars. Moreover, buses are preferred over other mode of transportation as they reach even the remotest destinations.

Travel Bus Italy

Italy’s vast and growing network of train tracks and the generally low price for train travel means that getting around Italy by train is almost always going to be your best bet. It’s fast and efficient – barring Italy’s sporadic but all-too-regular train strikes – and even most smallish towns seem to have a train station.

There are, however, times when getting around Italy by bus is the better (or only) alternative, even if you’re not straying too far from the beaten path. One of the places where it’s easier and faster to use the bus is Siena – especially if you’re going from Florence to Siena, but almost no matter where you’re traveling from. There are other places in Italy, too, that either don’t have a train station or where bus connections are more plentiful, so planning on a few bus trips isn’t a bad idea when you’re in Italy.

Unfortunately, there’s no national bus network in Italy the way there’s a national train network – so figuring out bus travel in Italy isn’t always terribly straightforward.

Picking up Your Rental Car at Rome Airport

When you come out of customs with your luggage in the Rome airport you are on the International Arrivals level – ground floor. There are only a few signs for car rentals and they point you to escalators that take you to the top level of the airport.

The car rental office is in the parking garage, across a  roadway from the airport. Do not attempt to get there from the ground level – use the walkway that goes to the 4th floor (otherwise you really get lost – we learned this first hand). From the airport upper level, you walk through a tube-like covered walkway to an intersection of walkways. The car rental office is in one of these intersections. There should be signs. If you take the elevators, the walkway from the elevator takes you directly to the car rental office.

This photo shows the office for several car rental companies – EuropCar, Avis, Hertz, Thrifty, Maggiore, National, etc.
